Iain is an architect and urban planner registered in the UK and Netherlands. He has extensive experience of designing and delivering complex and innovative projects, many characterised by the transformative impact of new technologies and typologies on architecture, processes and citizens.

A graduate of the Mackintosh School and Domus Academy, Iain was Head of Architecture at NTU before establishing the research hub, Instance of Uncertain Spaces at ArtEZ University of the Arts, Arnhem in 2018. IUS investigates coexistence with machines, spatial ambiguity and strategies for the productive landscape of the future. He has presented papers and exhibited on four continents.

Previously a director in London and Paris of a FTSE listed practice, he directs Instance (Architecture + Technologies) in Amsterdam. He has masterplanned aerotropolis, smart cities, campus for life science corporations and several nuclear power stations. Architectural projects, some won in competition, include corporate offices, automobile brand experience, data centres, broadcast media, pharmaceutical and software research laboratories. At a more intimate scale he has designed, exhibitions and television studios. His client roster includes Bouygues Immobilier, British Land, Century Link, Channel 4, CMI, EDF, Equinix, GMR, Google, Immofinanz, Hot TV, Mercedes Benz, Oracle, P&G, Roche, Steiner and NuGeneration.

Current work includes , ‘Smart Block’ – the clustering of creative industries in the city, an Airport City, Data Centres globally, ’Stack & Go’ – urban logistics and future mobility, WCS – a performing arts precinct.
